I have been an active duty Marine for the last 16 years. As I am nearing the end of my career I realized that I have been handing out a bunch of financial and real world advice to the Marines and service members that I work with.
Most of this advice are things I wish I new when I first joined such as budgeting/savings/investing planning, available base services and what real life application they have, and what it means to mature into a family man balancing new responsibilities and obligations to both family and country.
As part of a new series I am going to explore the unique challenges of being in the military and the great(possibly negative) financial benefits it provides.
Future topics will include:
- Understanding your pay
- Making a budget
- Free base services
- Base housing vs renting vs owning
- Buying car
- “Special Military Financing”
- Preparing for deployment
